Please excuse my poor excuse for a rant, but this has been on my mind for a bit, and I'd thought I'd express something that is relevant to all of us here on DA.

Go to the fanart section. Look through a few pages, spot something of high *coughjapanese* QUALITY. Click on it. Title: Anime gurl, Kitsune girl or something of the like with the familiar tilt that most Japanese CGs seem to have + 'emotive' words (eg. darkness, sadness lonelinesssssss) horribly added onto the piece. Artist Comments? "ehehehehe somethin i drew yesterday hope you like it!" You roll your eyes, another 14 year old art theif.

Yet somehow this train of thought doesn't really apply to everyone. You see other 14 year olds(excusable), some older(questionable), some MUCH older (ridiculous), praising this piece of 'art'! Comment whores? Maybe. People who don't know any better? Probably.

But I think anyone who has seen their share of western anime art and Japanese CGs has to be near-blind not to be able to tell the difference between an original and stolen piece of work.

Just some of the more common and recognisable traits:
1.)Poor JPEG compressions
2.)Typical Moe Moe anime girls
3.)Heavily tilted, blindingly shiny characters and scenery
4.)Badly written and applied emo poetry in horrid fonts
5.)some even have the signatures and watermarks, even WEBSITE ADDRESSES still on them.

If something's too good to be true, most likely it IS. Look through the gallery and you will most likely see highly differing art styles, and most of them will probably be posted with very short time spans between them.

If you see something that's an obvious art theft, do not keep quiet! It's pretty frustrating to see a blatant art theif being praised (by people even older than myself for goodness sake) for a work that is obviously not theirs.

If you're unsure, it's understandable, but most of the time art theft is PRETTY OBVIOUS. Comment on the piece if you can, and help this person kick this horrendous habit. If you know the source of the original picture, simply report it. (in fact, report it even if you DON'T know the source.)

Maybe I should just make a tutorial on this or something. .____.lll

Sorry for taking up your precious time. :worship: I'm just glad to get this off my chest. I didn't really think this dead horse was worth posting in the forums. Feel free to discuss anything here.

Very true... a few names come to mind, but the problem is they gather their 'fans' to form a protective circle around them.

It's really hard to get them when there is an army of 14 years olds trying to kill you. ><

A good and valid point you've raised - a tutorial is a good idea! :D

The rant was talking about, for the most part, Japanese CGs that one can easily find on google. Of course, anime art done by non-japanese will have a slightly different flavour to it. If that's the case, sometimes it's not as easy to identify art theft. I do find it a little questionable when a 14 year old can just whip up something like a full-blown CG on a whim.

You also have to take into consideration the overall attitude the artist in question takes to their work. A talented person who posts their original art will usually have a noticeably different appraoch in the way they present their work to others (in the artist comment's section) as compared to when someone posts something they found on google for attention.

I hope this answered your question. I'm a bit incoherent right now. ^^;
I wouldn't really go about pointing out specific deviants (its against policy) but you're right.
